Op 23 augustus stelden Randy Buelens (kandidaat 9 op Lijst Vernieuwing) en Frans Van Humbeek hun boek Vliegveld Grimbergen 1939-1946 dat ons van het Grimbergen in de jaren dertig naar (het Amerikaanse) Camp White Tie in 1945 brengt, voor.
Hieronder vindt u de toespraak van Karlijne Van Bree, schepen van erfgoedbeleid, n.a.v. deze officiële voorstelling.

To our American guests, good afternoon. On behalf of the municipal council of Grimbergen, as alderman for heritage policy, I have the pleasure of wishing you all a warm welcome.
Wij zijn bijzonder verheugd om vandaag en dit weekend een belangrijk deel van de Grimbergse geschiedenis uit het verleden terug op te wekken en te delen met u.
In the presence of several representatives of the American embassy and 17 American relatives of soldiers who stayed here at the time, we are very pleased to revive and share with you an important part of Grimbergen’s past history today and this weekend.
Most of you made a long journey as you come from Fort Wayne and New Haven, Indiana, and from North Canton and Westerville, Ohio. Again, your presence is greatly appreciated.
In Grimbergen kennen we het Vliegveld en horen we er wel eens over vertellen. We kennen ook de 2 unieke ronde vliegtuigloodsen die nog steeds in gebruik zijn en in de laatste fase van volledige restauratie zitten. Maar de hele site heeft een rijkheid aan geschiedenis in zich.
The real history and what happened between 1939 and 1946 was gradually brought back to the surface through strong work by Randy Buelens and Frans Van Humbeek, both residents of our municipality.
What started with intensive metal detecting work and its surprising finds, as well as numerous contacts and research through archives and conversations, for example in the United States of America, combined with existing knowledge about this site, resulted in new unique knowledge.
Zowel Frans als Randy zullen zo meteen hun bijzondere ervaringen met ons delen.
We kennen Frans Van Humbeek als luchtvaartjournalist en kenner van de geschiedenis van onder meer dit vliegveld. De combinatie en samenwerking met Randy Buelens die verder fysiek op onderzoek uitging, heeft tot prachtige resultaten geleid.
Later today we will inaugurate a memorial plaque with information that is located a little further here, so that a tourist or visitor to the airport receives solid and comprehensive information about the history of the airport during the period of WWII.
There is also the beautiful book with extremely valuable knowledge about what happened here and in the surrounding area in the period around WWII. We can therefore often put faces on the soldiers present who were here, which makes it all extra human.
Wij zijn de initiatiefnemers erg dankbaar voor hun inzet en danken ook mevrouw Katia Beirens van de toeristische dienst voor haar grote hulp bij de totstandkoming van het infobord. Ook onze dienst evenementen met Eveline en dienst communicatie droegen hun steentje bij tot het mee kunnen uitdragen van de waardevolle kennis bij het ruime publiek.
Finally, we express our gratitude to all who fought for our freedom during WWII. Freedom is precious and cannot be taken for granted. Many soldiers from various countries were here, far from family or familiar surroundings. This deserves continued appreciation and attention.

The official inauguration of the memorial plaque will then take place.
After a floral tribute and a minute silence, we will conclude here after the national anthems of the United States of America and Belgium.
A specific program is then offered to our American guests.
Everyone is also invited to the town hall tonight at 6 p.m. for the opening of the exhibition that has also been put together and can be visited all weekend.
